weed vs psychiatry
individualism is a reactionary survival strategy that hindu culture is particularly prone to. when we talk about mental health, this is what we're actually talking about.
all suffering is actually situated in material social conditions. all suffering- even the kind that can be remedied by solitary masturbation or narcissistic defence- has political solutions. the utility of political solutions is their sustainability. a lasting transformation ensures our children don't befall the same fate. without us having to micromanage their exposure under the guise of ✨protection✨.
i’ve taken a while to realise it's useless to pass moral judgement on individualist attitudes. it's usually a lack of alternatives talking. & an impenetrable loneliness.
is it selfish? sure. but what isn't?
but is it prone to desire hoarding of capital via exploitation of others? maybe. when you give up your life to the individual god- the personal hell- survival becomes your only relationship with your self identity. because you refuse to let others hold up mirrors to you. when that is the only way to discover the life you truly desire. the life you gave up on.
the wife that stalls divorcing her loveless marriage, the couple that can't discuss jealousy, the lone wolf incel- these are all the same people. they have defined their entire lives on the same one promise they made their heart- they will never let it break again.
when it comes to Healthcare™, of the heart, liver, or otherwise, i’m usually on team DIY. make your own bio-logic. trans tf out of your body. no prescription knows you like you know yourself.
i’ve always seen weed through this lens. i’d rather you take a bong rip with friends than the pills your psychiatric preacher who has pathologised your weekly confessions prescribes so you can ‘function’ better. drugs make sex better again. drugs enable ✨spiritual revaluations✨. drugs are as good a survival strategy as any other pills you could get dependent on.
but.
maybe that's not it. maybe what we need is something a little different. not just as good as institutional psychiatry. but better psychiatry. and maybe DIY doesn't mean find your copes yourself. maybe it means we collectively reclaim psychiatry.
it's no secret that those writing ✨technical✨ psychiatry textbooks have little to no idea what our actual problems are. but why forsake the ability to simply understand, or even name, our problems to academia? our are mental health problems really not such that with a little intention we can't figure out ourselves? it's our brains after all.
group therapy, aa meetings, and even heartbroken men in a bar are our people- academies for the wretched of the earth. our psychiatry.
words & bodies are just waiting for a little safety. the talking does the rest of the work. we are both disease and medicine.
